Disable automatic internet connections?

I must have recently altered a critical setting, as every time my XP
PC wants a net connection (or thinks it does) it goes ahead and dials
without my permission. (What's more, it doesn't even let me cancel;
when I do, the DUN 'Conecting' window pops up again!)

I'm darned if I can remember where to set this, so would appreciate
reminding please.

Go to Control Panel > Dialup Networking. Right click on your ISP icon and
select Properties. Under the Dialing tab, select, "Never dial a connection".

There could be a number of programs trying to connect to a website. One is
your anti-virus program trying to update itself. You may have a weather type
program or weatherbut trying to obtain updates, etc. Outside of that, you
may have some registration reminders, etc. Last of all, you may have a virus
or spyware trying to get out.

Install Zonealarm firewall and disable all programs except IE and E-mail.
You might be able to determine from the Zone Alarm alerts which program is
trying to access the web. Also, you can controll access through Zone Alarm.

Last, check out other messages in this group. Run Ad Aware and Spybot to
make sure you do not have spyware on your machine. Update your anti-virus
and run a virus scan or go to www.antivirus.com and run a free online scan
for versus.

Hope this gets you started. It's an on-going process.

Open the browser, click on tools, choose Internet options.
Click on the connections tab, choose the option NEVER DIAL A CONNECTION.
Create on your desktop a shortcut of the dial up connection: when you want
to connect, double click that.

Thanks. Here it's Control Panel > Networking. R-click > Properties
brings up 5 tabs: General, Options, Security, Networking and
Advanced - but no 'Dialing' tab.

Thanks. I know what program it is that's dialing - I just want to be
able to intervene as I used to.

Thanks. I had found that setting but think it is correctly set at
present at 'Dial whenever a network connection is not present'. I'm
not entirely clear what the precise result of your option would be,
but I know I've never had it set that way. I suspect it would slow
down the process of visiting any clicked link?

I eventually found what appears to be the relevant setting.
R-click DUN icon in tray. Select 'Open Network Connections' >
Advanced > Dial Up Preferences. Under the Autodial tab, enable (at
least) the first of these options:
- Always ask me before autodialing
- Disable autodial while I am logged on

Alternatively you can get the same dialog by Start > Connect To > Open
All Connections >Advanced > Dial Up Preferences.
