Chkdsk does not seem to do the job in spite of multiple attempts so I
wondered if any NG contributor had found another way, apart from a reformat,
of cleaning a dirty HD.

TIA

Don't know what you mean by dirty.

Sounfds to me like the drive is just faulty, and the bin might be the best
place for it!

There are three ways to run CHKDSK, all from a command prompt: (1) no
options, which checks the disk, but fixes nothing, (2) /F option, which
fixes some things, (3) /R option, which does /F plus more, and even checks
parts of the disk where there are no files. The /F and /R options require a
reboot to work.

If the /R option can not fix it, then it is time to save files and try
reformatting or getting a new disk.

Thank you Bob that's a help.

What Bob said plus backup your files 1st and after running CHKDSK /R if
it finds bad sectors then use the HDD manufacturer disk utility to test
the drive.
