Directory Permissions

I recently switched hosting companies. I am having issues with folder
permissions. What I am trying to accomplish is that I want people to be able
to go to a folder and if there is no "index" file I would like the contents
of the folder displayed. Unfortunately the new provider states that the
permissions are set through Frontpage and they can't assist me. I swear that
I have the folder setup to allow content viewing. I changed the properties
of the folder in the folder list to "allow files to be viewed" I am hoping
that someone has some advice to correct this situation. Thanks in advance
-John

You need to enable "Directory Browsing" ***on the server***

Thank you for the response. Where would I enable this on the server? I know
of three methods that should change the folder permissions...1st is to FTP in
ie and right click the folder and choose properties, unfortunately with the
frontpage extensions installed it doesn't allow this option. Option number 2
would be to log directly into the web site using Frontpage (which is what I
have been trying) and then selecting properties from for the folder in the
folder list column. This currently is set to "allow file to be viewed" yet
the directory cannot be viewed. The third option is a tool in the control
panel provided by the host, with front page extensions installed there is no
option to change directory settings. Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated. BTW, the error message I received was a HTTP 403 error. I have
since unistalled the fp server extensions, created a custome directory and
can view the contents of the folder. This was just a test because I really
do want the fp server extensions installed. Thanks again all =) -John

You can't unless the host allows you to, and in general this is something the host would set.

Just thought I would give an update to my situation. After two months of my
host telling me that I was setting up the permissions incorrectly, thanks to
your help I finally went back to the host and said you need to enable the
file permissions on your side, period. After two phone calls and my
threatening to cancel service, they switched my server from a windows server
to a linux server. I had to write a .htaccess file, but I now am able to
change the folder permisions. What a pain, but I appreciate your response,
without it I am not sure what would have happened. -John =)

Switching server should not have been the solution.... switching web host would have been...

Glad to hear you have it resolved.
