As long as the W98 machine has an ethernet card, yes AFAIK. You will need a
crossover cable, not a straight through cable, as I'm sure you are aware...

What is the reason for a direct connection via the LPT1 port? Is it for
transferring files or playing games?

For connecting to a LPT1 port you will need a special "Laplink" cable,
and special software to link the 2 PCs. I am not sure they even make the
software for that anymore.

Can you write your files to a CD (or 2) on the older PC and copy them to
the new PC?

Yes, as long as you have the correct type of cable to connect the parallel
ports.

Take a look at this web site. It's the first of an eight part guide on
configuring the connection.

I just want to do it to see if I can. I do have the parallel interlink
cable for the LPT port. I do have Ethernet cards for both computers and both
are connected to the internet via router. What would the best way to connect
the 2 computers?
Thanks Tom

I'm not sure I understand your question. If you're asking what's the best way to
transfer files from one computer to the other, you already have that capability
since both computers are connected to a router. Make sure both computers are
members of the same workgroup and enable file sharing.

If you're asking what would be the best way to establish a direct cable
connection, the only method I can comment on is using a parallel cable. It's
slow.

Let's go the router route. Enable file sharing and having the same
workgroup,is that it? Do I have to do make any changes to the router?
Thanks Tom

You shouldn't have to make any changes to your router. If you're using any third
party firewall programs, you'll have to configure them to allow file sharing on
your network. Check the documentation of those applications to see how this is
done.

My Windows 98 networking skills are a little rusty so my advice if you run into
any problems is to post your question to this newsgroup.

microsoft.public.windowsxp.network_web

That said, here are a couple of articles on XP networking that you may find
helpful.
