Digital Picture Resolution

Before I start...I don't want to use Photo Story.

My students are making 'movies' about a recent home stay.

No video involved, just digital pictures.

Really simple each student will make their own 'movie' using about a dozen
pictures with narration and BGM.

I'm getting them organized now and they've put their pictures on the server.

I was looking at the pictures this morning and the resolution varies from
camera to camera depending on the settings when the pictures were taken.
Some students shot on 'high' or 'fine' and the pictures are 2048x1560, 1.6 -
2.0 MB.

Here's the question - when the final output will be a DVD to be watched on a
TV or computer, what is the best resolution to use to have the clearest
possible picture without causing problems with MSMM.

Should the resolution be reduced to 1024x768, 740x480, or 640x480 to reduce
the file size?

(I've read about crashes and hangs when using pictures, either too many or
the wrong resolution)

Or can MSMM handle 10 or 12 high resolution (16-24 MB) without choking?

Thanks

800x600 is as good minimum and normal...

yes, it should be able to handle a dozen hi-rez ones fine...
