Your sound card must support Digital sound. Open Sounds and audio devices
from control panel - Volume tab - advanced. On the left panel - bottom you
should get an advanced button. On the bottom of that should be a radio box to
select for digital output only.
If you don't see that then check to make sure your card supports it . I have
the BA-735 with a soundblaster live! 5.1 sound card and it is supported.
Soundblaster also has software that will allow the selection of Digital sound.

Also these speakers may be connected as analog speakers.

I'm having exactly the same issue. I just purchased a Dell Inspiron 1501
notebook that came with Vista home edition. I wanted to hook up my BA735
speakers, but it appears my sound card (SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC)
isn't configured for digital speakers. Built-in speakers on the notebook work
fine, as do headphones. Just not the digital speakers.

There has to be some way to set my soundcard for digital output, but I can't
find it. Johnny's suggestion below didn't work. Any ideas?
