Difficulty with using Filename field located in Normal template in Word 2007

Helping a friend who wanted a simple header in all new documents that would
not appear on the first page, I followed Suzanne Barnhill's instructions
which I used years ago on how to do this.

It all worked except for one thing. The header included the Filename field.
But when I open and name a new document, the Filename field, instead of
disaplying the name of the document, displays as "Normal." The field is
displaying the file name for Normal instead of for the actual document in
which it is located.

I imagine the document is based on Normal.dot? Is this still the case after
you update fields? FileName fields don't update automatically in recent
versions of Word. See “The FILENAME field does not automatically update when
you open a document in Word 2002 or Word 2003” at

I hadn't thought of updating fields, becaue I had not run into this before.
I'll try that.

What events would make the filename update automatically? If you print the
document? If you display it in PrintPreview?

Printing will update it if you have "Update fields" checked on the Print tab
of Tools | Options (or whatever the Word 2007 equivalent is). If it's in the
header/footer it will update at print time even if you don' t have that
option checked. Print Preview can be unpredictable; it should update fields,
but my experience is that it doesn't reliably do so.
