different language spelling

Hi

I've installed French as a language on my Word 2000 because I sometimes
write letters in French and wish to use Word's spellchecker in French. That
part works fine. Before I start writing a letter in French, I set Word's
language to French and all is well.

I have a problem with the spellchecker in French. It does spell-check
correctly but when I click on F7 I first get 4 error warnings that the
"custom dictionary in c:\Settings and
Documents\myname\Applications\.......... is not available". After that it
starts spell checking in French correctly.

All 4 warnings seem identical - probably because the part in "........" does
not show in the warning window.

Can I do something about this? Thanks.

I suppose what this means is that the language of your custom dictionary is
not set to French (as it should reasonably not be if you're adding only
English words to it). You can create a new custom dictionary for French, but
I note that the default language setting for Custom.dic is "All languages."
You might check to see if that's what you have set. If it is, then I don't
understand the error message. If not, you can consider whether you want to
change it.

In any case, if you don't get a better answer than this in this newsgroup,
you might try microsoft.public.word.spelling.grammar.

Thank you Suzanne.

Your reply helped me understand and solve the problem. I went to
Tools\Options\Spelling and Grammar and then clicked on Custom dictionaries.
I found there 5 entries, all selected:
CUSTOM.DIC (default)
Webster1.dic
Webster2.dic
Webster3.dic
Webster4.dic

I do not remember where the 4 Webster entries came from though I think I
once installed a Webster dictionary. Since the error messages also numbered
4 I assumed they were the cause of the problem. These too were all listed
as "All Languages", a setting I had been unaware of previously. When I
changed their setting to "English US", the problem disappeared when I used
WORD for French. Obviously I left "CUSTOM.DIC (default)" set at all
languages.
