Different characters showing in the document

Hi. Not sure if this is the correct area for this quesion!! When i open a
Doc. i see squares aand various other characters as well as what to me anyway
appears to be either Chinese/Japanese writing!! The Doc was originally
created with Word 03 and i have tried to open it using the Trial version of
07. When i open in 03 the application does not respond.

Have i got a corrupted file? Any suggestions please?
