I was having trouble waking my computer and restarted it. From threre it
whent into ckdsk and started to deleted a couple files it found that were
bad. It restarted once more and kept restarting and could never get to the
startup screen. I tried safe mode but it kelp restarting. I inserted the
install disk and it would not allow a repair. So, I did an install. I never
saw a "clean install" option. I have Windows XP Pro. After that I think it
deleted the old reg and installed new and once I got to my desktop all the
files were gone and also from My Documents. My question is if my information
can still be on the hard drive because I had approx 47 GIGs left and after
the install I still have approx. 48 GIGs on the drive. Are the files still
there? I tried the search within hidden files and folder but can't find them.

please resond with any suggestions.

Hi Pink,
The more you start and restart the more the HDD rewritten and delete your
Folders which hold your Data.
It could be a virus or it could be an unsuccessful installation as you
didn't perform a real clean install, so whatever problems have been on the
old system, it is inherited on the new install.
If you don't have that valuable data, try from scrach and perform a clean
install:
Here is a link to prepare yourself fro clean install:
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html
If you took your Machine to a professional will know if your machine
infected or bad/unsuccessful installation and may can rescue your Data, or
you can do it yourself if you have an USB enclosure, you can Hook that drive
to another system NTFS and get your files and folders on removable media and
then wipe out the HDD and perform clean install.
Note if you done it yourself scan the HDD drive first.
HTH.

I think you reinstalled on the old Partition and your data wiped out and if
you didn't format, it will take a third party software to get your valuable
data if you didn't back up.
Do you still have other applications from the old install and can you access
them if yes?.

Also I have one more piece of information if this would help figure out what
happened. As I had to restart my comupter because it wa stuck in standby
mode I restarted and the check disk come on and scanned. I think it found
some bad files and started to delete some. After this it would just keep
restarting and would not go to the regular startup screen. Would check disk
have been at fault for deleting files? Maybe a virus perhaps?
