did I nuke too many TSR's ...

N

Nitro

yeah, TSR's and Services.

I grabbed the surgeon's knife and majorly slimmed down SERVICES.MSC

If I did something stupid, I'll be a good boy and not make any more
Microsoft jokes. The VAIO stuff is more arcane, but if there's any Sony
buffs out there who might be wise... i'll eat your words too.

Here's what's DISABLED in my Sony VAIO laptop:

ALERTER
APPLICATION LAYER GATEWAY SERVICE
AUTOMATIC UPDATES (no, I don't want them!)
BACKGROUND INTELLIGENT TRANSFER SERVICE
CLIPBOOK
DISTR TRANSACTION COORDINATOR
ERROR REPORTING SERVICE
HELP & SUPPORT
INDEXING SERVICE
MESSENGER (Thanks, Steve Gibson!)
NET LOGON
NET TCP PORT SHARING
NETMEETING REM DESKTOP
NETWORK DDE
NETWORK DDE DSDM
PORTABLE MEDIA SER # SERVICE
QOS RSVP
REM ACCESS AUTO CONNECTION MGR
RPC LOCATOR
ROUTING AND REMOTE ACCESS
SONY SPTI SERVICE
SQL AGENT$VAIO_VEDB (for some reason SQL Server keeps showing up in Tsk
Mgr.)
SSDP DISCOVERY SERVICE
UNIV PLUG & PLAY DEV HOST (thanks again to Steve Gibson!)
WINDOWS CARD SPACE
WINDOWS FIREWALL / NET CONNECTON SHARING
WINDOWS IMAGE ACQUISITION
WMI PERFORMANCE ADAPTER

.... and a slew of SONY VAIO SERVICES:

VAIO Entertainment database service
VAIO Ent file import service
VAIO TV Dev arbitration service
VAIO Entertainment UPNP client adapter
VAIO Media gateway server
VAIO Media integrated server
(same: HTTP)
(same: UPNP)

whew!

time for a beer!

Some of what you removed were probably not running anyway. You may find
yourself compromised if you try to install or change something for which one
of the removed services was required..

On Monday I ran a virus scan with AVG Free edition and after I stopped the
Windows Firewall service I got a message that ALG service failed and had to
shut down. I don't think ALG service has to be disabled but really the only
service that will affect performance much is the Indexing Service. If you
are burning CDs or DVDs it may make sense to disable the Indexing Service
temporarily. The networking services depend very much on whether you are
using a standalone computer or are on a local network or behind a router. I
am using a standalone computer with dialup connection for example. I have
set the Workstation and Server services to "manual" startup only. instead of
the default "automatic".
