dialup on-line and phone talk

I have a nec rockwell RCV56ACF v92 modem. MY dialup ISP says that I can talk
on my phone while surfing the net if I have a v92. I never heard this
before. They said that I need to follow modem instruction in setting this
up. Is this true, and how can I set it up?

Thanks, Paul

Hi Paul,

V.92 supports MoH (Modem-on-Hold) feature, which is explained in detail here:
http://www.modemsite.com/56k/v92moh.asp
http://www.v92.com/about/modem-on-hold.html

I've not used it, nor my ISP supports this standard.

From: http://www.ripnet.com/support/modems/V.92modems.htm

Modem on Hold
In order for it to work, your modem must support that feature; you must have separate Modem on Hold software installed on your computer; you must have your local telephone company's Call Waiting service on your telephone line; AND your ISP must have their equipment configured correctly to support Modem on Hold.

IIRC, the modem manufacturer supplies the utility (apart from the device drivers), to avail this feature.

I suspect you and your ISP have a communications problem. Either that or the ISP is clueless and you have to go to their next level of support - not unusual.

Anyway, if you literally have a "dialup" line (better known as "analog"), you cannot do both at the same time. If you have DLS, ADSL, etc., you -might- be able to. You must have a digital phone service to accomplish that, regardless of how the system works. Some digitals CAN work on analog WIRES, so you have to be very precise when describing it to someone.

So, the first question here IMO is, what kind of phone line do you have? Is it compatible? Your phone company could tell you for sure if you don't know how to tell.

v.92 supports modem-on-hold. You're right, you cannot literally surf the
web and talk at the same time but if the ISP and modem are configured
properly for v.92 you can make a phone call and the ISP connection will
be on hold.
