Dialup connection and XP?

Septima

I have been having an ongoing problem with my dial up connection on XP. At
first I thought it was the isp itself but when connected with win98 and my
old computer to the same isp I do not have the problems.

It seems that after I am connected for a short time that everything goes to
a crawl and I cant have my mail program and browser open at the same time or
it just stops ie mail gives me error messages and the sites timeout that I
am viewing. Now I know it cant be not enough memory and the computer is
newer so that is not the problem. And as I said my old computer with 98
doesnt have any problems with multiple windows open and my email downloading
at the same time. The old puter is a 200 pretty scarey when the old one with
98 does better on a dialup then the new one.

Below is what the computer is I have XP Professional so I am trying to
figure out if anyone can give me some suggestions on how to correct this as
it gets really aggrevating when I have to reconnect to get my connection
back. It does not do this all the time but it does do it when I have my
browser open to more then one page and my email downloading. Everything
either takes forever to work or it stops completely and timeout.

Computer
Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Professional
OS Service Pack Service Pack 1
Internet Explorer 6
Motherboard
CPU Type AMD Athlon XP, 1045 MHz
Motherboard Name ECS K7S5A (5 PCI, 1 AGP, 1 AMR, 2 SDR DIMM, 2 DDR DIMM,
Audio)
Motherboard Chipset SiS 735
System Memory 512 MB

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Using norton antivirus with mail settings disabled going out but on incoming
but have tried disabling it and it maks no difference. I use adaware no
firewall but for xp's and have turned it off and on makes no difference.
Machine is clean as far as I can tell. It has been this way since I set the
machine up. I use IE-spyad for IE but dont use IE and a hosts file. Opera
for a browser.

So have been trying to figure out if something is causing the problem but
cant figure it out. Have gone through everything with the isp it could be
but then again as I stated it doesnt happen on my machine with win98 just on
my machine with XP...

Hi Septima,

Are you using the same settings as you did with Windows 98?
Some settings may differ, you can contact your ISP and ask them the
exact ones to connect.

Also check your firewall settings, in case you are not using ICF
(XP's firewall)

Good luck

Hi Septima,

Check this information:
How to Reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;299357&Product=winxp

If you lost your Internet connection after removing spy-ware
(such as NewDotNet, and Commonname) the following steps will help
restore your connection. This works for Windows 9x/NT/2000/XP.

1.) Download WinsockFix.zip. (by: Option^Explicit)
http://members.shaw.ca/installations/WinsockFix.zip

2.) UnZip WinsockFix.zip
3.) Run WinsockFix.exe.
4.) Click the Fix button.

This program will clean up your TCP/IP connection and rebuild the
database.
After the program is complete, reboot.

WinSock Fix
Winsock and TCP Repair Utility
This Utility Restores Registry Keys, that may become corrupt after
Removing the
Host Program that Modified them.

Good luck, hope this helps
