Subject: Dialogue Box every morning "Properties for this item are not available."
Date: Thu, 13 May 2004 11:22:59 -0400
This is a bit of a weird issue. I'm not really sure how to go about trying
to troubleshoot it.
Every morning on my W2K DC whether I leave it with the user logged in or I
login in in the morning I'll have 2 boxes up that say:
"Properties for this item are not available."
But it does not say what the item is. I also have no tasks running in the
task scheduler, I do not see anything in the log files.
Would anyone have a clue as to how I would go about troubleshooting this
daily annoying occurrence?
Thanks
---------------------
Here are some suggestions (in the order that I would do them)
1. Scan for spyware/malware
2. There may be some third-party browser extension thatt is loading up and
causing problems.
To disable these:
- Open Internet Explorer
- Clear the checkbox for "Enable third-party browser extensions
(requires restart) found in Tools > Internet Options > Advanced
If this works, then you can proceed to delete the one(s) causing the problem
To delete them:
- Run Regedit
- Entries for browser extensions will be found in the below key.
Export and delete the suspect ones.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Extensions
3. Get a copy of msconfig.exe from a Windows XP machine (or an equivalent
utility), disabling all startup items, rebooting, and seeing if the error
occurs.
If the error doesn't occur, then you can work to deduce which item is
responsible
4. Also, I would be suspicious of shell extensions that could be causing
the problem:
