I am using Windows XP Pro and cannot hear the dialing
tones when dialing. Dialup works OK and I get the
connection. My volume is turned up. My speakers work OK
and I get sound from DVD's and CD's and .wav files. Is
there a setting that will mute just the dialing tones?

If it's anything like XP Home:

Right click [your dial-up connection] > Properties > General tab > Configure

Check "Enable modem speaker".

The dialing tones usually come from the system unit speaker, not your stereo
ones, and AFAIK are not affected by the volume control.

Go to Control Panel - Phones and modems

On the Modems page, highlight the modem in the panel, click Properties
On the Advanced page of that is a box for Extra Settings:
in that enter M1L2

The L2 could also be L1 (quieter) or L3 (Louder) - experiment
