Hi I have a 56k data, fax voice modem. But how come I can only get 44 kbps or less ( 19.2 kbps ) connection speed. My sister has a 56 k modem too but she can get 52kbps or more. We are on the same house and using different phone lines. Pls help.

Some of your house phone lines are in poor condition, with
loose or corroded wires. Also, she may be on a shorter wire
run with fewer splices.

It is also possible that your software/firmware/hardware is
not as good as her setup.

Maybe she is using servers for downloads that are less busy
and or closer to your home.

Maybe she is just prettier than you and the gods favor her.

Hello Mav !

A few guiding questions :

Do you and your sister use the same ISP(Internet Service
Provider) ? Different ISPs often offer different speeds,
depending on the how much you pay them, usually.

When you say "connection speed", do you mean connection
speed Windows is telling you, or the actual download
speeds from different sites ? There are download sources
that could be much slower then others.

How fast if your computer compared to your sister's one ?
Older computers could struggle with even a 56k line
making it slower.

Whose modem is newer ? There is a standard in 56k modems
(the v.12) that's been around for quite a while, but if
your modem is not a v.12, IE an older one, that might
cause the slow speeds.

Lastly, are the phone lines of good quality ? What I mean
is, there are lines that might be old, and bent around
alot, causing distortions to the connection, so if her
line was laid at a later time, or your line is just old,
it could be the reason. Calling your telephone compant
and asking them to check the quality of the line could be
a good idea(it helped me when I had problems with my DSL
connection, but might help Dial Up too).

As a side note - I haven't used dial up in a while now,
so I probably don't remember much of it. I just told you
about the more common, non-software problems. Hopefully,
somone that knows more about modem configuration in
Windows could help you with that part.

Good luck !

.
Check phone line for noise. You can use a phone. Plug a
phone in the Jack and push one number and see if you have
noise on the line.

Modems operate differently, and line quality differs within the same
house as well, often depending on whether you got two numbers withing
the same line and/or got the line running over electric wires or near
motors.

The 'different phone lines' is the key - the speed you can get is
entirely dependent on the quality of the exact circuit to the exchange.
44K is not bad - 52 is extraordinary.

There's your answer: different phone lines. We had to get our phone
line upgraded in order to achieve speeds of 52 kbps. Also, if you use
different ISPs, that could also be the problems. Using the SAME phone
line, I have gotten speeds of 33 kbps. using a different ISP.
