Dial-up Subnet mask 255.255.255.255??????

Hi group,

I have several laptop users that dial in to a Shiva RAS server and
authenticate to a backend IAS server for mobile connections. All laptops are
running WinXP Pro SP1.

The problem is the following: All laptops receive IP's from DHCP. When
connecting using the LAN, they receive an IP and subnet appropriate for my
network. However, when connecting via the dial-up connection, they only
receive an IP and the subnet is always 255.255.255.255. One laptop is able to
go online with no problem, however all of the other laptops, once dialed-in,
are unable to view any websites. I'm wondering if this subnet might be the
problem, however all of them have it so I'm not sure where else to look. The
network settings are all the same on the laptops. Can anyone shed some light
on what might be causing some laptops to not be able to browse the net?
Thanks.

Why my XP VPN client's subnet mask is 255.255.255.255

This is by design. Since this connection is point to point, not point to net
or net to net, VPN server assigns 255.255.255.255 mask to the client.

Can't access the Internet while using VPN

Symptom: after establishing a VPN connection, you may not be able to access
the Internet because the VPN takes over your existing connection and all
traffic to use the VPN default gateway on the remote network. The remote
network may not allow VPN clients to access the Internet via their gateway.

Resolutions:
1) If you don't need to access the entire VPN resources, disable the "use
default gateway on remote network" option in the properties of the VPN
connection. To do that, go to VPN
Connection->Properties->Network->TCP/IP->Properties->Advanced-, uncheck
"Use default gateway on Remote Network".
2) Edit route table manually if you know how to or check routing page on
this web site.
3) For the security reason, some firewall/routers like Cisco PIX do not
allow access the Internet after establishing the VPN and you cannot modify
the routing table. You may setup split-tunnel.
