Diable task pane on startup

I have searched the posts to this group and have found postings on how
to keep the task pane open on start up. I would like to STOP the task
pane from opening when I create a new workbook from an open workbook.
I find it very annoying to have to go through the extra steps when I
want to open a new workbook. I am running Excel 2003 under Windows XP

In the tools>options>view dropdown menu, the "Startup Task Pane" box
is unchecked. There is a file in the Program Files>Microsoft
Office>Office 11>xlstartup which opens and runs hidden on start up. I
read the posting about editing the registry to add a line to keep the
task pane open but I'm not sure if that would work (change the 1 to a
0) to prevent it from opening.

Any thoughts?

TIA,

Garry

Sorry, my second post went to la la land. I tried that and it didn't
work. See original post
