DHCP question

We are redesigning our network so that each floor of the building is on a
different network id
10.0.1.0/24 for 1st floor
10.0.2.0/24 for 2nd
10.0.3.0/24 for 3rd
10.0.4.0/24 for 4th
10.0.5.0/24 for 5th
10.0.6.0/24 for the servers (AD/DHCP/DNS)

What i need to know is, is it possible to get the dhcp server to only assign
the 10.0.1.x addresses for the 1st floor subnet, and 10.0.2.x addresses for
the 2nd floor subnet etc. Or will i have to put a dhcp server on each floor
for the different subnets?

You need only one DHCP server. Make sure you have the proper IP Helper
configuraton.

I understand about using ip helper on the routers to forward dhcp/bootp but
how will the dhcp server know which scope to assign the ip address from?

It will only see the MAC address of the dhcp relay/router not the ip address
of it. So it wont know that its part of x subnet and to assign the
corresponding scope of addresses no?

Hi

I am not the greatest on DHCP yet, although i do get on with it and dont have any problems

Anyway, when you make your reservations on the DHCP server, using client MAC's, surely you wont have any problem as long as you make the reservations within the appropriate scopes

Someone rectify me if i am wrong
