Two out of 5 computers running Windows XP on my network with SBS 2000 are not able to log on to the server. This happened from
yesterday afternoon without any action on our part.

When manual configuration of the IP address is done, even then the computers do not log on and when DHCP is enabled, the local
computers either show 0.0.0.0 as the local address. When the systems are rebooted, some other address is shown locally.

I shall appreciate any help in getting my network going.

You have a network problem that is preventing the XP machines from
physically reaching the server.

You'll find that pinging the server by IP (when you've manually
allocated an IP) doesn't work.

I'd start by checking the network equipment and wiring.

Steve,

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the network card but without success and every time I lend up with an automatic private
address for my network card.

Try this and mind you profiles will be wacked out.... set up a new computer name and see if they join up.

Also look in the event viewer for codes 5719 and 1043 occurring over and over again.

Susan,

Thanks for your suggestion. I am not able to join the domain and the event viewer does not have the codes mentioned by you.

Now the only alternative left for me is to replace the network cards and then see and shall report back to the group during the day.

Thanks,

Thanks for your post.

When the network switch is turned off , I get the message that the network cable is unplugged and once the it is turned on, the
message comes that the network cable is now connected.

Three other computers in the network are working fine.

Now the only alternative left for me is to replace the network cards and then see and shall report back to the group during the day.

On the WinXP machines, you might want to try resetting TCP/IP...

After running the nodes for more than 1 hour, one of the nodes got connected to the Server but the transmission of the packets is
slow leading to the error "Semaphore time out", which means that the NIC is functioning intermittently.

Now the only alternative for me is to replace the NIC.

Shall report back after replacing the card.

There are no errors mentioned in the event log and it does not work with static IP. The only significant event log error that could
be found was:

I have tried replacing the NIC on one of the computers but the same problem is persisting. Static IP address is not being accepted
and an Automatic Private Address is being given.

I am not able to find any solution. The other 3 nodes are working fine.

Unfortunately the response which I posted 2 days back has not been shown here. The culprit was network cable (concealed) from the
