i have a new electrovaya scribbler 1240 tabletpc running
windows xp tablet. i have the following problem both with
the 802.11b card and the ethernet card. neither can get a
dynamically assigned ip from my linksys router (my other
computers can, as the router is properly set up for dhcp),
instead they (the wireless card and the ethernet card)
alway come up with 169.254.x.x (my router is set up to
assign 192.168.1.100-150), and when i try ipconfig/renew i
get "An operation was attempted on something that is not a
socket" every time.
i've tried deleting winsock and winsock2 from the registry
and then running "renew int ip reset resetlog.txt" as
recommended for this error in the knowledgebase, with no
result. i still have the same problem.
i've also uninstalled McAfee.

i'm pullin' my hair out. please help!

What you tried looks like Method 1 on MSKB-817571, I had
the same problem and when I used Method 1 it did not fix
it. However, when I used Method 1 and Method 2, that is,
I replaced Winsock and Winsock2 with good ones from my
other computer and rebooted, it did work. Let me know if
works.

I have traced several of these problems to improperly configured winsock
LSPs. Run "winmsd" and go to Components/Network/Protocol. Look at the
names in the list, anything with "MSAFD" in it or the "RSVP xxx Service
Provider" should be fine. Anything else is suspect, and uninstalling the
owning program might help.

If that fails or your provider list is empty, you may need to rebuild the
catalog from scratch. The following instructions will rebuild your catalog
for TCP/IP. If you are using any other transports (If you don't know, then
you probably aren't) then you will have to reinstall them as well.

1. Backup and delete the following registry keys

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2

2. Reboot

3. Go to the network connections folder, right click the icon for your
network connection, and select properties.

4. Click install, choose "protocol", and click "add..."

5. Click "Have Disk...", enter "\windows\inf", click OK

6. Select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click OK

7. When the process in complete, reboot
