DHCP 1 day lease; 5,000 clients

Marlon Brown

I have 2,000+ Macs and 3,500 Win2000/WinXP nodes on my network.

All users are instructed to shut down computers at the end of the day (and
that's what they usually do).

That said, you agree it makes sense let DHCP lease = 1 day ? The short IP
address lease is going to help me keep DNS aging/scavenging settings short
as well.

It's probably OK. The client attempts to renew at 50% of the lease, so that
would be six hours.

Isn't that a lot of traffic? Last place I looked after dhcp with 10,000
nodes we kept 8 day lease. Most users come back on every day, keep old
address anyway so dns isn't a problem. They last over weekends and just keep
staying the same. If you have a large transient population then go short.

Try a network monitor and watch traffic by type.
