dfs for dummies?

A

Al Dykes

I've been given a couple big ntfs disks that I have reason to believe
are dfs volumes. I've never screwed with dfs. I want to mount them on
a stand-alone w2k system that has never seen a dfs disk. A search of
the MS KB finds fome dfs how-to material but the important step doen't
match my system.

Looking at:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/812487

"Distributed File System" Doesn't exist in my Administrative Tools
folder. A search of C: for anything containing Distributed, or any
*.msc comes up with nothing.

Huh?

Hello Al,

DFS is not a disk system, it is used for combining folders from one or more
servers under a root folder and distribute them to the users. Is your server
a Domain controller? If not, than this is the reason because you don't see
the Distributed file system under the Administrative tools. You have to install
the adminpak.msi to your server and you will see the additional tools.

Best regards
