Dfs: cannot access share via Dfs root on PC not on Domain

I am a newbie to Dfs, so I may not have the exact terminology, but
here goes.

Netapp file server called "SRVR" is part of our win2k server "WINSRV"
domain called "DOMAIN". Shares are created on the Netapp server same
as on windows file server. To access the Shares, we type
\\SRVR\sharename. We are then prompted for username and password,
which is input as DOMAIN\userid then password. Access is granted.

We recently add an new Netapp filer called "SRVR2" and it is also on
the domain.

To make it easier for users and us admins, we decided to use Dfs so if
we change or add servers, the users can always point to Dfs Root for
links to shares.

After creating the links for Dfs on "WINSRV", we have the following
links.
\\WINSRV\files\share1 --> \\SRVR\share
\\WINSRV\files\share2 --> \\SRVR2\share
\\WINSRV\files\share3 --> \\SRVR2\share2

If I goto a laptop running win2k pro and I am NOT logged into the
domain and run \\WINSRV\files\share1, I get an error message
"\\WINSRV\files\share1 is not accessible. Login failure: unknown user
name or bad password"

I have 2 work arounds, but I am hoping for something better.

If I 1st "Disconnect Network Drive" and clear any connections
then, "Map Network Drive" and type \\WINSRV\files\share1 it will
prompt me for a userid and password. I give it DOMAIN\userid and
password and the drive maps. After that start, Run \\WINSRV\files
works without any problems.

2nd workaround, If I do a START, RUN and type \\SRVR\share (netapp
server share), it prompts me for userid and password. Supply them as
above and from that point on I can connect to \\WINSRV\files.

I want to be able to sit at a PC, click START, RUN, type
\\WINSRV\files and have it connect or ask me for username and
password.

Any suggestions and sorry for the long post.

Steve

more closely monitored in
that group. Someone there should be able to help.
