So maybe it isn't lost, but I have no idea where to look. The device manager no longer lists dvd-cd-rom folder. It lists it as <other devices>. Since nothing new is on the computer, I am assuming that this is my cd-rom. I am not able to update driver to read my cd burner and it does not show up in the bios screen. any suggestions?

Hi,

Run this script.

If nothing has changed:

To remove Unknown or Other Devices: You can delete the non-present devices
from registry. To determine the hardware key of the device:

Go to Start/Run/CMD. At the command prompt, type the following commands and
press enter after each line:

set DEVMGR_SHOW_DETAILS=1
set DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1
start devmgmt.msc

Click the View menu and select Show hidden devices. Right click the device
you want to delete and click Properties. Click the Details tab.

Select Device Instance ID. The value of Device Instance ID is the hardware
key of the device.

For example, if you see the value is Root\Image\0000, the full hardware key
is: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\Image\0000

Then go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to the key. The data of the
Driver value is the software key of the device. Delete both the hardware
key and software key.

With respect to Kelly reply / answer....

DVD or CDROM normally do not need to do anything to be show-up in Device
Manager. WindowsXP will install a driver for it.

Check if that ROM drive still working.
Remove / uninstall from "Other Device".
Shut-down your PC with your CDROM or DVD by disconnect the IDE or the power
cable.
Boot up if Windows still show up and place in Other Device. It should not
show up.
Shut-down and bootup again, this time with the CD ROM or DVD attach. Make
sure both IDE and or the PowerCable is firmly attach to the drive.

Check again in DEVICE MANAGER and see if the category under "DVD/CD-ROM
drive" show up correctly with your CD/DVD ROM driver listing.

If still have problem, you can try swapping out with another ROM drive and
see if that same problem show up.

CapFusion,...
