Device manager is missing

D

David Sherman

Windows XP Home
I right click on My Computer, then go to manage
then I go to Device manager,
all items in Device manager are missing.

I have applied the patch here:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

reboot, still no luck.

I have checked for virus etc.and have removed them all.

Any suggestions?

thanks

I am having the same problem. I think that something was removed during
attempts to remove "apropos" adware. I don't know what the owner removed,
however. Perhaps active x controls, snap-ins.... I don't want to restore, as
the adware registry changes were pretty bad. Any ideas how to reinstall the
device manager alone?

You would have to find out which .cab file on the XP CD contains the device
manager files. The only thing, then, that I can suggest is a repair
installation of XP.

David,

This issue showing up recently, seems to be caused by a Malware named
Apropos.C. It installs a Kernel driver with a random file name. More
information available at:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/spyware.apropos.c.html

Removal tool:

See if running the AproposFix tool below helps:

Thanks to McCarthy for supplying the above URL. Note that the utility
referenced above removes a Malware reponsible for blank device manager.
