Device Manager does not populate

OK... all hardware seems to be running fine, though I did notice "My
Computer" was getting slower to fill up with my drives. Finally I thought to
check my device manager to see if there was any issues --- it will not
populate at all.
Went into Safe Mode and it still will not show anything.
Found a reference to this issue saying to stop and start PnP service.. did
not help.

Besides possibly opening the computer and disabling all drives but primary
(note: my primary is E as I installed XP on a new drive with my old drive
still active... it kept the C label!), any suggestions as to getting my
devices to show?

Run devmgmt.msc or if it is truly gone, create another
one by running "mmc /a", adding the device manager plug-in
and saving that to devmgmt.msc in %windir%\system32.

The Device Manager loads, but stays blank. I looked down your support link
and even tried your Devices - Show Hidden registry entry. No go.

The odd thing is, if I run the task manager and watch the CPU usage when I
open the Device Manager, it jumps to 15% then back down to near 0. It is
like the Device Manager is not polling the system at all.

Start the Plug and Play service.

Open Services...
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click Plug and Play |
Set Startup type to Automatic | Click Apply | Click the
Start button | When started, close Services

No Items Appear in the Device Manager List When You Open It

It did not -- I found that fix in the Knowledge Base when I first noticed
this issue. I have even disabled the PnP service, rebooted, turned it back
on and rebooted. Last night I unpluged my two optical drives on the off
chance they were causing the problem. No help.
Every drive and piece of hardware responds normally when accessed. There is
still a delay when I open "My Computer" of about 45 seconds before it
populates - that is what made me think there was a problem with a drive.
I downloaded Everest Home 2.20 last night, but I am guessing it uses the XP
Device Manager to get the system device list because it was unable to get a
list either.
Planning for the worst I bought a 160gig USB hard drive and backed
everything I want (PnP detected and set the drive up perfectly).

I have a piece of information I just discovered, not sure if it is a
side-effect or root cause of my problem: If I right click any folder or
drive and choose "search", the "Look In" field stays blank. I can click the
drop down arrow and select a drive (with the delay while the drive list
populates), then go on to search. I know it used to fill the "Look in" field
with the drive or folder name before.

Took a jump, and did a system restore to the day before I installed a USB
driver for a cell phone adapter -- did not help. Went back another month for
another restore..... Device Manager works fine now. I had looked at every
restore point back to the day I selected and did not see anything that should
have caused my problems. Wierd, but working now.

OK -- probably my last post on this. After the restore with everything
running, I get the standard "You have updates waiting" message -- so I tell
the system to install. It does, reboots and now the Device Manager does not
populate and the My Computer is back to the delays.
I looked through the updates that installed and I think I have found the
source of all my problems. KB905749 -- a "fix" for a possible PnP exploit
(though with service pack 2 the hacker would already need local access and
valid credentials, which means he is already WAY beyond the need for the
exploit). According to the details of the patch it is uninstallable via the
Add/Remove control panel --- tried and and ended up needing to reboot into
Safe Mode and restore again. Sheesh.

I am kind of burned out in this right now, so since I pretty much think the
problem is that patch, I will live with it.

I am having the same issue with the device monitor not populating
I noticed the problem after i installed a wireless router at my home
office. Afterwards my wireless connections were not showing up on my task
bar. Went to network and I only show my dialup accounts. No lans or wireless.
My lan connection are working fine though.
Went to the device monitor and it will not populate to enable my wireless.
Nothing shows up. Ran the "show" command listed in ms help and it did not
help.
Verified plug and play services running in service menu.
I am not fond of having to edit my registry unless i am sure that is what
needs to happen.

The following shows up under problem devices in
Noted in one of the post that a patch may have caused this. Is this a common
issue that MS knows about and can it be undone?

In the sytem information section the following shows as problem devices
Base System
Device PCI\VEN_104C&DEV_8204&SUBSYS_014E1028&REV_00\4&39A85202&0&0BF0 The
drivers for this device are not installed.
Dell Wireless 1450 Dual Band WLAN Mini-PCI
Card PCI\VEN_14E4&DEV_4324&SUBSYS_00031028&REV_03\4&39A85202&0&18F0 This
device is disabled.
Universal Serial Bus (USB)
Controller PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24CD&SUBSYS_014E1028&REV_01\3&61AAA01&0&EF The
drivers for this device are not installed.

I noted the dev manager showed as a problem yesterday but is not there now.

HELP and Thanks
