Hi there I was wondering if anyone can help me please,

I have windows xp home edition. Every time I start it I get the
following txt file on the screen.


[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21787


The file is in the folder C:\Documents and Settings\x\Start
Menu\Programs\Startup


How can I get rid of it? Can I delete it?

Rename it from desktop.txt to desktop.ini.
Then right-click it and give it the hidden attribute, or use the command

attrib +H desktop.ini

in the folder containing it at a command prompt.
