Desktop Transparency Question from novice

When I first got XP Home, the "color" of the desktop background behind the
icon text was no color at all. It was transparent and that area of the
wallpaper could be seen instead. Somewhere along the line it wouldn't do it
anymore. I can chose a color under Display, Appearance, Advanced.

I've already been on the MS website to try to figure it out but I couldn't.
This article says to clear the drop shadows box.

I tried this too: It says to check it.

Would anyone know how this novice could get it to go back to the
transparency?

Thanks for any help you can offer,
Bonnie

Hello Bonnie

Here are four things to check that could be stopping you from getting
the transparent look; hopefully one of these will solve the problem.

[1] Turn the drop shadows box ON (Control Panel > System Properties >
Advanced > Performance Settings > Visual Effects).

[2] Right-click on the desktop and point to Arrange Icons By. Make sure
Lock Web Items on Desktop is UN-checked.

[3] Go to Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web tab and make sure
both checkboxes are clear. If not, uncheck them.

[4] Be sure that the wallpaper you have set is a graphic file such as
..bmp or .jpg, and not an .html file (try using one of the standard
Windows wallpapers first).

Good luck!

Thanks very much Nightowl. Number two in your list fixed it. The desktop was
locked. Thanks again.
