Desktop Snafu

Greetings,

I am running WinXP Home and for whatever "odd" reason
my desktop has, on the left side, an emulation of a
folder window. (With options to do stuff) I can't seem
to get rid of it!? Can anyone tell me how to reviel my
entire desktop?

(Oh, I was trying to place a personal pic on my desktop
while setting a neutral background. The pic never showed
up but this side options bar did. I only want to see
these choices when I open a folder... not on my desktop!
(These are functional options by-the-way!)
