I have a kind of a wierd problem. I want to change my
resolution from 800x600 to 1024x768. I can do that, but it
is only the desktop inlarging, and resolution is not going
up. My screen still runs 800x600, and desktop 1024x768.
That is not what I want to happen. What is my problem? It
has never been a problem before...?

I have a Samsung Syncmaster 500s screen, and an Ati Radeon
9600, 128 Mb graphic adapter. It has always worked, it is
installed and running without problems.
I have to mention, that I have just re installed allmost
everything. But why should it become a problem, when I had
used my Product recovery cd-rom?

Please answer me quik.

Regards, Kevin Rasmussen.

ATI usually provides extra features in their video drivers that windows
alone doesn't offer. One of those common features is the ability to set
your desktop size independent of your video card resolution. When
happens when you set the desktop to 1024x768 and the screen to 800x600
is you get a scrolling/panning viewport into the larger desktop. The
solution is to make sure you set desktop=screen size. Go through the
settings tab of the display control panel, and also try the advanced
button there. If you do not use this control panel, then you have to
figure out how to manage the desktop on your own using the ATI program
in the system tray.

There appears to be some limitations with this monitor. It is not VGA
compatible. The only solutions for using it with Windows that I could find
via a Google search apply to Win95/98/ME, NT 4.0, Win 2000 and Linux
only.

Could find no mention anywhere of it working with WinXP. Since it works
with Win2000, you may be able to get some functionality using the Win2000
files provided for it. However... <quote> even if you can configure your card
properly the monitor will only display in windows at certain resolutions </end
of quote>

One company
(http://www.si87.com/MonitorSolutions/samsung/syncmaster500s.html) also notes
that they can provide support up to Win2000 only with their customized cards.

Sorry that I couldn't find anything more promising for you but it looks
like you'll have to experiment to get the best results that you can with
this monitor.

I have the same display adapter as you and have enjoyed it very much. It
runs two monitors, each using 1152 x 864, for me. One of the monitors is a
Samsung Syncmaster 171v. The other is a Sony Trinitron.
