Desktop Shortcuts to Web Pages

Recently all the shortcuts to web pages I had created by
right clicking on them and then clicking on "create
shortcut" have stopped working properly. While clicking
on them indeed opens MS Internet Explorer, it opens to a
blank page with no address in the address bar. These
desktop shortcuts all used to take me directly to the
page from which they were created. Now they don't. I
have no idea why. Can someone help me correct this
problem? Please & Thank You.

Any other suggestions?

IF you right click on the icon what does it say?

Have you installed hot fix #821557?

Does this occur on new shortcuts that you have recently created. Test to
make sure.

Right click one of these non working shortcuts and select Properties/Web
Document tab. In the URL line, select the URL text and right click/Copy.
Paste the address into the IE Address Bar and press ENTER. If this takes you
to the website, then the shortcut is OK and somrthing else may be broken.

Hi Jeff,

Yes, I have installed HotFix 821557.
As for the Icon question...
If you're referring to the desktop shortcut icon - right
clicking on it brings up the usual right click menu of
choices for any such icon.

This isn't going to be helpful, but I wonder whether this is a version
of the other problem I keep seeing, people opening new webpages and
getting blank windows. First time I've seen it mentioned about a
desktop shortcut to a webpage..

Might as well ask if you are able to click on links in web pages to
reach other sites, and if "open in a new window" works in the same
way.

Hi Maureen,

Thanks again for trying again.
Clicking on links in web pages opens new page as usual.
"Open in a new window" also works fine, opening the new
page in a new window.

Hi Ronnie,

Thanks for chipping in.
I had already done as you suggested (In the URL line,
select the URL text and right click/Copy.
Paste the address into the IE Address Bar and press
ENTER.)and doing so does indeed bring me to the website.
As for the issue of new vs old shortcuts, the problem
occurs with ALL shortcuts.

Michael

Go to Start/Run, then type: regsvr32 urlmon.dll (including the space)
and press OK.

Open Internet Explorer and go to Tools/Internet Options/Programs and click
on the Reset Web Settings button. Try the shortcut again.

Ronnie,

Thanks very much. That did the trick. All my shortcuts
to web pages are once again working properly - both old
and new. After seeing your fix I think I now realize how
the problem came to be in the first place. About a week
or so ago, I installed Mozilla and configured it as my
default browser. After a few days of trying it out I
decided to revert back to using MSIE and uninstalled
Mozilla. I suspect that when Mozilla was configured as
the default browser, it "hijacked" all my shortcuts to
web pages. Then when I uninstalled Mozilla, the full
functionality of the shortcuts did not revert to MSIE.
Consequently, although they would indeed launch MSIE,
they would not insert the URL in the address bar.
However, once I ran your fix, which reset MSIE's Web
Setting, it ostensibly restored full functionality to the
shortcuts. In hindsight (which is of course always
20/20) I feel a little foolish for not having figured
this out for myself. But then again, I'm no MVP.
Fortunately you are. Thanks again. Your help is much
appreciated.
Best regards,

Michael
