i want to modify my desktop wall paper but my appearance and themes icon
seems to be missing from the control panel......any ideas??

Sounds like you have your control panel set to classic view. On the left
hand side as you look at the control panel you should have the option to
switch to category view click this.

A quick way to change your wallpaper is to minimise all of your open
programs, right click your desktop and click properties. You can change your
wallpaper from the desktop tab.

Right click on the desktop.
Properties

Are the applets listed or do you see the categories?

its not set to windows classic, and when you right click on the desktop,
properties, the only settings you get are for the screen saver and
moniter......i've tried everything i can think of. as far as the control
panel goes....everything is normal....just no appearance and themes icon

The Display Properties should have several tabs: Themes, Desktop,
Screen Saver, Appearance, and Settings. To change the wallpaper,
click on the Desktop tab.

Is this a personal computer or a work computer?

Try browsing to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
and see if the following keys are present and the value is set to 0:

NoDispBackgroundPage
NoDispBackgroundPage
NoDispCPL
NoDispScrSavPage
NoDispSettingsPage

i just read something that mentioned all the symtpoms my computer is having.
turns out its caused by a trojan horse virus.....its a personal computer
