You can troubleshoot with the following article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;310560
The idea is to turn programs on one by one until the problem reappears.
Then you know which program is causing the problem and you can update it
to see if that helps, or delete it and switch to another program.

Colin,
I have the latest video driver from Intel. But how do I find which
process causes a refresh? I looked in the Task Manager, there are 3 or 4
dozens of processes running... Which one is a culprit? How can I identify
it?

You need to see what process running on your system is causing a
refresh. For starters make sure you have the latest video drivers from
manufacturer's website (not Windows Update).

Colin,
I do not ply games, except occasional Minesweeper, and never noticed
any change in resolution. As I mentioned it in the original post, this
happens out of blue... Is there a way to correct it?
Ilya
It is not a function of SP2. I only see this when first booting or
when a game I have been playing exits and the system restores my
default resolution.

Recently, I've noticed that the icons on my desktop, the browser and
some other open windows reload <without any provocation> on my
part... I could work in a word processor or do something else, when
all those mentioned above windows would reload quite quickly.
Although no harm is done, I wonder if this is normal for Window XP
Home SP2? If it is not normal, what causes this reload? How to fix
it?
Any help is appreciated.
