Desktop partial covered

Hi I am working on a computer that had a desk top hijacker. I have removed
the viruses and I have everything working well except the desktop. On the
left side there is a task list similar to that in My Computer folder. How do
I get the task list to go away so that the desk top can expand to the whole
monitor screen.

Have you tried:

Right-click on a "blank" area of that list.. Choose "Toolbars" and make
sure everything under that is "unchecked".
 
No menu comes up when I right click the blank area. I have checked the
desktop properties and task bar properties. They are normal.
