Right-click the Desktop. In menu it brings up, be e sure "Show Desktop
Icons" is checkmarked; if not click on that to mark. No luck, re-post;
others may have answer.

Michele, on next Startup tap F8 and see if you get a Menu. If yes choose
Safe Mode. If the computer boots into Safe Mode then select Start>All
Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.

I tried booting up in safe mode, but nothing will dsiplay on the desktop
(just a black screen). Is there any way to run the system restore without
being in windows?

What part of "but the desktop will not display" confused you the most, you
waste of air and bandwidth?

I'm in this dilemma

was there a conclusion to this

all i'm getting whether I start in safe mode or otherwise is a black screen
with the cursor which moves and thats it ?????

I am having a similar problem. After carrying out a 'system restore' as I
had done recently, the computer has rebooted, has appeared to go through all
the usual load up screens - including the windows xp load up - and then
produces a blank screen. The mouse is functional but there is no task bar or
any icons - nothing. I carried out the system restore as usual and I have
not installed any new software since my last restore. Can anyone help?

MDL- spoke to Dell after posting on here who ran a diagnostic check and found
a fault with the hard drive

Luckily its still under warranty and will replace on wednesday :o)

Dunno if this helps you tho?
