Desktop keeps reloading

Bought a cheap, second-hand Dell from a guy with 98SE installed. Encountered
a number of minor problems (kernel32.dll errors, etc), so I upgraded to
win2000 pro. I skipped the "clean install" option because I wanted to save
some of the previous owner's old programs, like Office 2000. Anyway, the
chief problem is that the desktop keeps reloading for no apparent reason. I
don't get an error message when this happens. It just quickly reloads and
goes back to normal. But it happens every few minutes, which is unbelievably
annoying. Any clues or advice for troubleshooting this? Thanks.
 
Be advised that upgrades from win9x almost always fail for any number of
reasons. Save yourself some time and trouble, given that you'll more than
likely end up with an unstable OS with all the remnants/ corruption left
behind from the upgrade. Best to blow it all away and go for the clean
install.

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 CD-Rom or setup disks.
The set of four install disks can be created from your Win2k CD-rom; change
to the \bootdisk directory on the cd-rom and execute makeboot.exe (from dos)
or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

During Windows 2000 setup, at some point, will want to confirm the previous
operating system for the upgrade; at that point you'll simply insert the
qualified product install CD for it to verify. Then the install will
proceed.

Check the pc, mb or hardware manufacturer's web site for the latest bios and
or Windows 2000 drivers for your devices.

Be sure to apply these to your new install before connecting to any network.

Or dual. HD are cheap, get a 20 gig, put it in, go FAT32 so you can
share files, install the dualboot, live happily ever after.
Be sure to apply these to your new install before connecting to any network.

Download those files before starting, then pull the network plug. Take
this very seriously, because the virus/trojan/worm writers certainly do.
 
Upgrading an o/s because you are getting errors is no way to get a stable
sys. You need to cure the errors first.

YES! Otherwise you risk almost certain infection before you can get it
done. Tests typically show that an unpatched windows box is infected in
SECONDS after being connected to internet. Never hook up an unpatched
windows machine to any network of any kind.
