Desktop items not using clear background on text?

Hi,

Im running Windows XP Home on my sony vaio laptop. My screen has bee
playing up recently and would not reactivate itself after xp shut i
down after a period of inactivity. I ended up giving my keyboard a bi
of a 'mad tapping' session in the frustration of the display not bein
restored.

Anyway, after this I have come back to my desktop only to find that
now have poor quality shadows behind my desktop icons and also the tex
is not using a clear background?!!? In fact it looks as though I hav
highlighted my desktop items but I haven't - the images are obviosul
not highlighted.

However items inside a folder or my docs etc are completely fine! So i
must be soemthing i've managed to change through desktop properties? Bu
I can't find what it is for the life of me, so if anyone can help out
it would be much appreciated.

I have attached a screenshot of whats going on.

Right click 'My Computer', Advanced, Performance - Click on Settings, under
Visual Effects scroll down and click on 'Use drop shadows for icons on the
desktop' You should be back to the look you are after.
