Desktop Icons

Is there a way in XP to remove the shortcut arrows from the desktop icons. I remember using a small program in Win 98 that allowed me to remove them from the shortcut. Is this possible in XP? I have a vast array of icons, but I have always been annoyed by the little arrows. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Admiral, have a look at the Powertoys for Win XP, make sure you use the right
powertoys with your version of XP.

Powertoys for Win XP Pro

Powertoys for Win XP Home

Interesting, Kaylene. In the past, the links for both Pro and Home led to
the same file. Now the URLs are different. The one shown for Home is the
URL that I have as a TweakUI version suitable for pre-SP1 XP, Home or Pro.

Will ask around and find out what's up with this. Thanks for wording your
response as you did.

Still checking but downloading and checking digital signatures would seem
to indicate the differences between the two target downloads remain to be
post-SP1 and pre-SP1.

The pre-SP1 version will certainly work on any XP. The post-SP1 version
does something if SP1 is not present. Can't remember if it tosses an error
or gives a message about SP1 being needed. Bottom line is it won't install.

Others have told you how to do this. I'll just add my caveat:

My recommendation is that you do *not* do this. The arrows serve
an important function--providing quick visual identification of a
shortcut. If you remove the arrows, you run the substantial risk
that sooner or later you will delete something you wanted to
keep, thinking that you were just deleting a shortcut to it.

Hi Sharon, I'll be interested in your research.

Here are some other links?
If you have not installed SP1, the earlier version can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

If you check the download URL for TweakUI from the XP Home download page,
it matches this link.

The second URL that you've just posted (the one from the MS support page
download section) leads to a file identical to the one that is linked at
the XP Pro download page. The URLs for the actual downloads, the tweakui
installers, are different but the files match if you download and compare.

I'll be glad to drop you an email if I hear anything. So far all I've done
is to run this by a few of the other MVPs and submitted feedback via the
links at the various pages. We'll see what happens from there.

Thanks Sharon, I checked the links and see what you mean.
