Desktop icons

Help!!!!!! I am new to Win XP Home and was wondering if anyone knows how to keep the desktop icons in a specific order. I use a drafting software and have alot of projects with short cut icons. Every time I shut down and boot back up I have to re-arrange the order of my icons. I've tried all the options for the desktop icons and still have the same results. There is one option that is grayed out ( arrange by group) I don't know why this option is not accessible. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Specifically, be sure Auto Arrange is unmarked. If it is, click on it to
remove the checkmark. I've kept my Desktop as wanted doing this.
