Desktop icons

All icons on my desktop are identified with text under them. This text is
highlighted with the background colour. I would like to turn of this so that
I just see the text. How do I do this?

Hold the Windows(logo)Key down and hit the Pause_Break key. You'll get System
Properties page. Click Advanced tab; click Settings button in Performance
block.
Click beside "Let Windows Choose...." or scroll down to "Use drop shadows
for icon labels..." and click to check that box, on the Visual Effects tab.
