Desktop icons reappear after reboot

C

css

I will, on occasion, save an email attachment to my desktop so that I can
open it up & review it. Once done, I'll send it to the recycle bin.

Every once in a while, when I log on, the file is back on my desktop.

This keeps happening to myself and the owner of the company and I just can't
find any help on this topic.

I found a post here that suggested maybe I didn't have read/write access to
my home folder and that I needed to test it by logging on, deleting a file
from the desktop, logging off, then logging on the server & seeing if it
dissappeared (it did, so that wasn't the problem, but haven't been able to
find a solution.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Connie

This can happen with roaming profiles. Best to talk to your server/network
administrator.

Unfortunately, I am the administrator.

I deleted an icon from my desktop yesterday. I logged off last night.
Windows had an update that required a reboot this morning. After reboot, the
icon was back. In the mean time, I had not logged on to another machine.

Can you provide more specific info? If it was just me, I'd delete the icon
again and not worry about it. But the owner of my company always saves his
attachments to his desktop, then deletes them later. He had at least 25 old
icons back on his desktop. Since he pays my salary, I've got to keep him
happy! :)

Thanks,
Connie

Files do not reappear by sheer magic - they reappear because a copy kept in
a different place is restored to your desktop. With roaming profiles this
"different place" is the user's home share on the server. Check your boss's
home share and you will probably find duplicates of the bothersome icons.

Deleting these icons manually is curing the symptoms, not the cause. If you
have roaming profiles that no longer work they way they are meant to then a
safe course of action is to ask a suitably qualified person to check out
your system.
