Desktop Icons not being applied

I have a W2k machine and I have about 45 icons on my desktop.

Normally, they all show correctly. But every once and a while about 15
of them never get the correct icon and show the generic ms icon.

When I reboot, it would look fine.

Why would this happen?

One possibility is an issue with the icon cache. TweakUI has a Repair page,
and Rebuild Icons is the first choice in the dropdown list. You can download
TweakUI from

The shelliconcache could be corrupted or you need to increase the size of the icon cache. Just do a search in the Microsoft Knowledge base for shelliconcache:

Do NOT delete your shelliconcache. Use the first link instead.
