Desktop button restore to taskbar?

I deleted one icon from the taskbar at the bottom of the
screen, and the desktop button also disappeared - I can't
get it to re-appear. It's the one that when you click on
it, the desktop appears over all other active windows. I
can get the word "desktop" to appear, but when I click
it, I just get a long list of programs on my desktop, not
the desktop itself. Any help will be greatly appreciated!
