In the properites of a desk top short cut, what do I add
at the end of my url to cause the link to open in a new
window?

If I understand the question, the setting you want is in control panel
\ folder options \ "open each folder in its own window". OR control
panel \ internet options \ advanced \ un-check "reuse windows for
launching shortcuts".
