designing a file server

I am looking for some reference materials on how to build a file server. We
currently have a file server with about 500 shares. I am looking at things
like ease of administration...security...etc. One thing I am thinking of
doing is cutting down the number of shares to just the names of our
departmnets and then securing the folders underneath with NTFS permissions.
That way a user won't have to have 20 drives mapped they can just browse
their depatments share to find the folder they need. What do you
think?...Any links to some reference material would be greatly
appreciated... I couldn't find any usefull info in TechNet....

Looks like it's aimed at server 2003, I'm working with a w2k server but it

may have some tips that will be helpful no matter what the version...thanks.
