Deploying software packages & permissions

H

Harrison Midkiff

Hello:

I created a folder on my network for deploying my software packages. The
folder is called "Packages". When I deploy packages I deploy them to
computers not to users. Software packages are deployed by a computer being
in a group. I want to make sure I apply permissions so users can only
access packages which are authorized for there computer. In my "Packages"
folder I have created sub folders for each of the applications I deploy.
Can I just remove the everyone group from these folders and then add the
proper group? Since this is a computer account and not a user account I am
a little puzzled how the permissions will apply.

Yes if the computer is member of the particular group it should works.
During Software installation for software's applied to computers, the
computer account are used to access the network, since no user context is
actually logged on during this process so the user permission doesn't
matter.

Hello Harrison,

Thank you for your posting.

According to your message, I understand that you have deployed softwares to
the computers, and thus you are confused by the related permissions.

If this is the case, the computer will use the System account to access the
software packages. So it is meaningless to remove the Everyone group from
these folders and then add the proper group if you want to limit to certain
users to access the packages.

If you would like to allow some users to access the packages, you can
deploy software to users, instead of computers. Or after the program is
installed on the machine, you can set the permission on the related program
files to certain users.
