Denied access to Firewire drive

My C: drive failed over the weekend. I stole another HD from another machine, reformatted it and installed XP Pro. My computer now has two internal HDs and one external Firewire HD. The Firewire HD appears in Windows Explorer, but I cannot access it. The drive also appears in the Device Manager, and is shown as "working properly". It is listed under the Disk Management as "online"

When I try to access the drive, I get the message: "E:\ is not accessible. Access is denied.

Does anyone have an idea what might be happening, and how to fix it?

Did the drive work previously? If not, try doing a format of the drive
(and don't choose "quick format" do a full format).
I actually saw that behavior once and just rebooting the machine (with
the drive attached) actually worked.

Yes, it was working perfectly. Disk Management can identify the volume
name, size, free space and format [NTFS]. I've rebooted several times,
and I've powered the drive on and off. I've disconnected and reconnected, etc.

I believe this is a security issue, since everything seems to be OK but
"access is denied". Is there some way to reset permissions under XP Pro?

Are you logging into it with an Administrator account? Hmmm...actually
it just occurred to me that you say this happened after you rebuilt the
machine? Is the machine part of a domain or just a standalone?

Yes, I am using an admin account. I had a hardware failure and lost my boot drive. I put in a new hard drive, formatted it and installed XP Pro. After the install, I tried to access the Firewire drive and got the "access is denied" message.

My machine is part of a workgroup, but not a domain. Currently, there are only two MACs and this PC on the LAN. For all purposes, this is a standalone machine

Hmmm...I'm sensing a possible SID issue with your account. The old one
is gone, the new one is different and the security is set for the old one.
If you can't "take ownership" of the folders/files then you may have to
rely upon a third-party utility but I'm not sure, offhand, which are going
to be able to break into those folders.
