DELL Latitude D830 Win XP SP2 crashes if USB HDD gets attached

Hi!

First of all English is not my mother tongue so I hope you understand my
further explanations.

2 weeks ago I bought a DELL Latitude D830 with Win XP Pro SP2 installed.
Everything works fine in the original state it was delivered by DELL. Except!!

My Problem:
If I connect any device like a mouse, Memory stick, iPod or a Nokia-Mobile
via USB everything works fine as well.
Just if I connect an external Hard drive working on other systems Windows
crashes. It can be either 2.5'' without own power adapter or 3.5'' with power
adapter. Windows seems to detect the HDD. You can hear the plopp if a USB
Device gets attached. Under notifications in the Taskbar windows tells me the
device has been detected and installed properly. I can still move the mouse
pointer. Start Menu works and Task Manager can be started. BUT if I want so
start any program like Internet Explorer, Word and so forth the process shows
up in Task Manager but the program doesn't get displayed. No new Icon in the
taskbar. If you try to shut down the system the normal way via
Start->Shutdown, concerning Task Manager some processes are terminated, but
not even the screen telling me I am getting logged off will be shown. The
only way to turn the Laptop off is by pressing the On/Off-Button for some
time. If I check Event Viewer->System and all the other logs there are no
errors.

BUT I have one Message coming up every minute since I attached the first
external hard drive:

What I already tried:

* Endless searching in forums like this - couldn't find anything
* Updated the Bios from A05 to A09 - nothing changed
* If I deactivate booting from external HDDs in BIOS the system crash is
even worse if I attach the external HDD via USB
* I reinstalled the drivers for the chipset and USB
* No viruses found concerning McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.0.0 with
updated virus definitions
* After booting Knoppix from DVD everthing works. I can attach any
external HDD via USB.

I don't know what to try else or what causes the problem.

Highly appreciating any help and wishing you a nice day!!

Take care!

HI! Try this, please:
Open control panel > system icon > open system > device > open and you have
all device in your pc. Checked
usb serial universal (open clicke +). If you see a signal like this ( ? ),
yellow color your usb is not installed. Clicke on signal ( ? ) and start
installed your usb HDD. You open usb serial universal no have any signal,
all usb is working well.
Now another way: install the driver again and checked but this drive has to
be compatible with windows xp. Checked your windows xp is genuine.
