I should add, that if it is a reinstall cd that actually installs Windows,
you might be OK. To find out, insert the cd, cancel the splash screen and
open My Computer. Right click on the cd icon and select Explore. If you
see a single file labelled something like "Ghost.exe" then you should
probably not proceed. This should only be used on the computer it came
with or another identical model.
If you see a number of folders, inlcluding "Setup," then it is probably a
standard XP cd "branded" by Dell, perhaps with Dell utilities added. In
that case things would be better because a Windows installer will put XP
on the drive and the hardware abstraction layer will not be a problem.
You never did specify if both laptops were the same model. If not, you
may have the wrong video and soundcard drivers on the reinstall cd.
But I still don't know what happens with activation unless you are
abandoning the new laptop entirely.

Try it. I hope I'm wrong. I'm more concerned about activation than it
rejecting the key. I'm also concerned about whether or not the two
laptops are the same model, because if they are not the hardware
abstraction layer being written by the restore cd may cause problems.

How come?
:
No. Even if they are the same exact model.

The Dell Laptop came with Windows XP SP2, I can not use SP 2. I have
another
Dell Laptop, and have it's restore cd with SP1a. I need to use
Windows XP
1a, with the SP2 keycode on the bottom of the laptop. Can this be
done?
:
Use the product key affixed to the bottom of the laptop if you are
using
the
restore cd. Use the product key on the retail package (inside the
cd
folder) if you are using an XP cd purchased by you separately.
I suspect that product codes for XP (Pro or Home) SP2 retail cd's
are SP2
version specific.
You cannot use a retail product code with any reinstall cd.
I am a little confused by your post.
Are you saying that the Dell restore cd is XP SP2? or is the Dell
restore
cd
SP1a?
Are you saying that your computer came with XP SP2 installed or with
XP
SP1a
installed?

Can I use a Windows XP SP2 Keycode when I redo my laptop with a
Windows
XP
SP
1a restore cd? I could not purchase my new Dell Laptop with SP
1a, it
had
to
have SP 2, but certain software I use is not yet SP 2 compatible.
